Assignments
The assignment process is different based on whether you are living in the residence halls or apartments.
Residence Halls
Assignments are completed based on the date the completed application was received. A completed application includes a signed Agreement and the $300 Housing deposit. Incoming/New (to UB) students must also submit a $150 tuition deposit. Starting with the earliest completed application received, we begin to assign rooms based on the applicants requested preferences. We will first attempt to match the first preference, then the second, then the third, etc. If there are no available rooms in your preference areas, we will randomly assign you to a vacant space. We have identified spaces for first-year students, transfer students, returning students, international students, etc. Available spring housing options are limited in number. It may not be possible to accommodate requests.
Apartments
Unlike the residence halls, in general, apartments are not assigned based on date received. Instead eligible applications are prioritized by number of semesters the applicant has lived on campus. Each application is then given a random, computer generated lottery number based on the number of semesters on campus. Apartments are offered to students working from the top of this priority list, until the supply is exhausted.
Groups are assigned before individuals, based on the availability of whole and partially open units. We encourage students to indicate a roommate preference should their group have to be separated.
Those applying for the apartments after the collection period or for January move-in are considered based on availability of apartments and the date application was received. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that any roommate requests will be accommodated due to availability.
